Maybe one of your board members gave you feedback that you need to improve your executive presence. Or you and your co-founder keep having unproductive conflicts. Maybe you’ve realized you’re “too nice,” and need to get better at giving feedback and holding people accountable. Or you’re overwhelmed because you’ve never managed a team before — let alone a rapidly-growing organization.
There could also be a deeper reason you're here.
A partnership where you're 100% free to explore ideas and fears without worrying how you'll be perceived. Where you'll feel less lonely at the top and grow into a fundamentally wiser and more effective version of yourself. A partnership that challenges you when you get in your own way, supports you through uncertainty, and holds you accountable to the growth you most want.
Over the last 15 years, I’ve helped hundreds of founders become intentional, resilient, and high-EQ leaders — giving them the tools they need to build the team, business, and life they actually want.
And the beauty is — as they grow as leaders — they grow as people. They become better wives, husbands, parents, sons, daughters, and friends. They become more complete and fulfilled human beings.
When you’re ready, I’d love to help you do the same.

"Michael helped me set actionable goals and held me accountable to them instead of just talking ad hoc about my thoughts and concerns, like so many coaches do."

Co-Founder, Breather
"The first time that I spoke to Michael, I left feeling like something impactful had happened. Someone who finally had insights for me, who got through to me. He helped me set actionable goals and held me accountable to them instead of just talking ad hoc about my thoughts and concerns, like so many coaches do. He really listened and gave valuable suggestions for improvements, and solutions to help make my big ideas even bigger, not only for what was best for me, but for also for my company. No one can teach you how to be a founder — it’s something that you have to learn (very quickly) as you go along. Having Michael to help guide me along that journey was infinitely helpful and I highly recommend coaching to help you grow both as a founder and a leader. Look no further, this is the guy for you."

"Michael's biggest impact has been helping me build systems to make a strong transition from founder to CEO."

Co-Founder & CEO, Olark
"In the multiple years I've worked with Michael as my coach, he has consistently listened, reflected, and helped me take action in meaningful ways. He is fantastic at asking the right questions that lead me to new insights and help me grow. His biggest impact has been helping me look beyond individual conversations to build systems that have helped me make a strong transition from founder/leader to CEO. Specifically, Michael helped me solidify the importance of being ruthless with my time, which helped me step away from operations. He helped me be thoughtful about expressing gratitude which lead to a worldwide discussion around mental health in the workplace and an HBR Article. He helped me navigate parental leave as a founder/CEO, which has fundamentally shifted how I integrate work and life — and when I returned, he helped me take a step back so that I could focus on the most impactful conversations. Michael has made a meaningful impact in my growth as an executive, and I have a strong belief that he will have a similar impact on your growth as well."

"Michael's advice helped me identify areas where and how communication among team members could be improved, which has helped us execute better as a team on numerous occasions."

Co-Founder & CEO, Xola
"When Michael and I first spoke about company culture, I was struck by how thoughtfully he spoke about the nuances of effective communication and how company culture is defined as much by what we do not do, as it is defined by what we do. I admittedly had not given much attention to shaping our culture, though was urged to consider how this is one of the most valuable assets of a startup. A company with strong vision and invigorating culture is as important as the ideas you pursue. Michael's advice helped me identify areas where and how communication among team members could be improved, which has helped us execute better as a team on numerous occasions."

"If you want to level up your leadership game in a way that simultaneously humanizes you and those around you, you need to work with Michael right now."

Co-Founder & CEO, Resolve
"Michael is a gifted coach with uncanny skills in leadership development. I attended a T-group intensive retreat that Michael facilitated and was blown away by his ability to influence, teach, and embody an aspirational model of interpersonal dynamics. My goal by the end of the weekend was to do whatever was necessary to work with him. Soon after, he and I completed a coaching arc which I will describe as nothing short of revolutionary. If you want to level up your leadership game in a way that simultaneously humanizes you and those around you, you need to work with Michael right now."

"Michael keeps me accountable, and helps me actually achieve the growth I most want as a leader. He challenges me directly, but makes it so much fun."

Founder & CEO, Sleep Reset
“As I’ve worked with Michael over the last year, he’s helped me raise our series A and more than double our team. Michael has helped me understand the limiting beliefs and assumptions I’ve been making (all my life!), and has helped me become a much better pitcher for the company, which allowed us to run a very competitive process and raise a great round. As we scaled our team, my role changed and Michael helped me through that transition by identifying my areas of development and coaching me to grow in those important ways. I’ve worked with several other exec coaches in the past, and I didn’t like it when those coaching sessions became more loosely-structured therapy-style sessions where we discussed things reactively. Michael does a great job of helping me address important things as they come up without losing sight of the overall goals we’ve set. He keeps me accountable, and helps me actually achieve the growth I most want as a leader. Michael challenges me directly, but makes it so much fun. If you have a chance to work with him, take it. I’d work with him again in a heartbeat if/when his schedule opens up."

"In the right hands, Michael's coaching is easily worth 100x if not 1,000x his fee. If you have a chance to work with him, I highly recommend it."

Founder & CEO, Conveyor
"I’ve worked with Michael as an executive coach both one-on-one and in co-founder pair coaching. I think our company would have failed if not for the pair coaching my co-founder and I have done with Michael. This critical investment in the most important pairwise relationship in the company has unlocked our ability to run the team drastically better, which has helped us create millions of dollars in current value for the company and shareholders, and it has set us on the path to create a lot more. In the 2+ years I’ve worked with Michael, we have tripled our team size, more than doubled our revenue, and successfully built and scaled a remote team. Working with Michael has been an amazing return on investment. In the right hands, I think his coaching is easily worth 100x if not 1,000x his fee. If you have a chance to work with Michael, I highly recommend it."

"For any CEO looking for both practical leadership skills and real personal growth, Michael is the rare coach who delivers both. I can’t recommend him enough."

Co-Founder & CEO, Scratchpad
“Building a startup is a tough and constant learning experience — not just for the company but for the founders, too. Working with Michael has been invaluable in that journey. Sure, he's helped me with the fundamentals — running better meetings, giving clearer feedback, managing my time — but the real impact has been on how I show up as a leader. Through our work, I've learned to bring more vulnerability to my role, which has changed how I handle challenges, strengthened my relationship with my cofounder and other leaders, and had a ripple effect throughout our company. For any CEO looking for both practical leadership skills and real personal growth, Michael is the rare coach who delivers both. I can’t recommend him enough.”

“Michael has been the best investment I've ever made into my personal and professional life. He has helped me dive deeper than any advisor I've worked with, uncovering assumptions that were wrong and helping me develop healthier habits as a leader. Simply put, Michael has changed my life in profound ways. I absolutely could not recommend him more.”

Co-Founder, Evidation Health
"Michael's approach to coaching is exceptionally centered, thoughtful, and warm. He relentlessly but tactfully digs deeper to uncover the underlying causes of what prevents us from accomplishing the life trajectory we want. Michael has shown me how to engage more deeply with the world around me by becoming more curious of other people's thoughts and more grateful to be able to share mine with them. Michael rarely addresses leadership tactics directly but instead chooses to focus on the deeper mental models that shape those tactics, creating a positive, lasting shift that goes way beyond leadership skills as a result."

Co-Founder & CTO, Tenyx
"Working with Michael these last few years has been a transformational experience. Everyone's position, experiences, and beliefs are different and it requires immense dynamism and skill to be adaptive and effective to that range of people. Michael has this unique quality in spades. I am incredibly grateful for his listening, creativity, and persistence in our work. I have found our work together to reliably shift my big assumptions and core fears towards deeper understanding and action, both in my personal and professional life."

Founder, Blue Riband Group
"Working with Michael has been transformational. He has been in my corner for over a decade listening, supporting, pushing, and holding me accountable to what matters most. He’s helped me build the business I’ve always wanted to run, challenging my limiting assumptions while helping me develop systems that work with, rather than against, my natural tendencies. Through our work, I’ve learned how to build a team, maintain great relationships with LPs, and present myself and my fund to investors in a fully authentic way. Beyond business, Michael has helped me navigate life's biggest transitions — becoming a husband, becoming a father, and an international move. The way he listens, cares, and so often says the thing I need to hear have all had a huge impact. He has not only helped me build a better business, but a more fulfilling life."

"One of the best parts of working with Michael was looking back and seeing how much I had grown as a leader."

Repeat Founder & Product Leader
"Michael and I clicked immediately from our first conversation. He’s humble, inquisitive, and passionate about helping me achieve my goals. He helped me navigate and take action on many complex situations, and was my biggest advocate — constantly looking for ways to help me improve and calling out wins when I was completely oblivious to them. From helping me tackle strong personalities to helping me clarify and move forward on my big ideas to pushing me to confront how to best prioritize and spend my time, having Michael in my back pocket has been one of my secret weapons to executive leadership success. One of the best parts of working with Michael was looking back and seeing how much I had grown as a leader during my time working with him, and realizing what big work we’d been able to do together."

"Since working with Michael, my business is booming, my relationships are thriving, and I've never been happier and more fulfilled in my life."

Founder & CEO, MetaNeer Labs
"Michael is an amazing coach, trusted mentor, and friend. Before he and I started working together my company was failing, I had run out of money, my relationships were degrading, and I felt completely overwhelmed. Michael helped me weather the storm, put a plan in place, and kept me accountable — ultimately helping me make tough decisions that I would have never made on my own. With Michael's support, I started a new business that was designed around my personality and needs. I work far less than I used to and I'm on pace for a seven-figure revenue number after only 12 months of operation. Now, my business is booming, my relationships are thriving, and I've never been happier and more fulfilled in my life. I know that Michael always has my back, and I hope to continue to work with him for many years."

"Michael is deeply knowledgeable, highly empathetic, and always there for me. I can’t express how fortunate I feel to have Michael as my coach."

Chief People Officer, Virta Health
"I began coaching as an inveterate skeptic. Over the course of working with Michael, I became convinced that it really works! Michael helped me unpack the deeply rooted beliefs that drive some of the behaviors I’ve tried and failed to change in the past. I observed and measured (yes, quantitatively) the impact of Michael’s support and seen meaningful positive changes in both my work and personal life. Michael is deeply knowledgeable, highly empathetic, and always there for me. I can’t express how fortunate I feel to have Michael as my coach and friend."

"I've experienced tremendous value working with Michael. His client-led coaching approach has helped me develop much deeper insight into how I show up in critical conversations and how I relate to my wider executive team. The lessons I've learned with Michael have helped me improve my overall effectiveness as an executive and have been useful in numerous situations outside of just my career. My only complaint is that I wish I had connected with Michael sooner."

"If you're on the fence on whether to engage Michael, do it. By working with Michael, I better understand my inner stories and assumptions, I've learned new techniques as the result of repeat practice in live situations, and I've developed good habits that build trust with my teammates. Michael, or as I affectionately call him, Dr. Marvin, is an awesome coach and one I'd highly recommend!"

Founder, Redwood Advisors
"I could not recommend working with Michael more. He helped me see that pursuing what brings me a true sense of energy is critical — and that doing so intelligently is the best way to achieve real success. Michael's passion, talent, and skill all came together to help me get so much out of our work together. He brought a complete presence to every conversation — he listened, asked the right questions, pushed back, and pushed me to think more clearly and confidently about who I am and the life I want to lead. I would strongly recommend working with Michael. The support and direction he provides on your journey will be invaluable."
My typical client is a Series A-C startup founder.
I love working with startup leaders because: (1) their tolerance for uncertainty and bias toward action help them get a lot out of coaching, and (2) given that their companies are still in the early days (relatively), our work can have a major impact on the entire company culture and trajectory.
Though I predominately coach startup leaders, I work with a variety of founders and leaders — ranging from family business leaders to non-profit execs to founders of small firms. It comes down to fit at the end of the day. We are likely a good fit for each other if:
Put simply: their goals.
Each of my coaching engagements focuses on 1-2 top goals chosen by the client (informed by self-reflection exercises I provide + by feedback from their team and from me). These goals range from "inner work" on things like mindset, resilience, productivity, and emotion management, to "outer work" on things like EQ, interpersonal dynamics, management, and public speaking. These goals provide the heartbeat of our work together, and in the vast majority of cases, my clients achieve them.
My approach is referred to as “co-active” coaching, which means that my clients and I are equal partners in the coaching experience. Though I know a lot about leadership and development, I am not an all-knowing expert on my clients' companies and dilemmas. Accordingly, my coaching is not a one-way relationship where clients come to me with questions and I share expert advice. Instead, we discover the right answers together by each bringing something to the conversation. My clients bring their goals, industry- and team-specific knowledge, honesty, and best thinking, and I bring a range of tools to help them uncover insights and identify new actions to take after each conversation.
During coaching conversations, I...
Fundamentally, my coaching approach helps my clients achieve their most pressing goals by deepening their awareness (of themselves, of situations), and helping them see more choices. As they do so, they become wiser, more effective, and more fulfilled.
There are a few things about me that — especially when combined together — make me relatively unique in the coaching world:
Balance of warmth & strength. I show up with warm care and empathy, coupled with a rooted male strength. I'm open and honest about my care for my clients, and I regularly share the joy and excitement I feel as they take risks and make progress. I hold space and create safety. As one of my clients says, "I know you'll have my back even if I spill my guts." I'm also clear when I'm concerned, disappointed, or want to challenge my clients to stay the course.
Keep it real. I strive to show up as my full human self in each coaching conversation. This means no weird power dynamics, no overly jargon-y riffs, no suits, and no ego. It means I bring my full kindness, curiosity, intuition, and playful irreverence each day. My clients and I share openly about ourselves, and talk in plain terms about the challenges and dilemmas they're facing. We laugh, celebrate, push, reflect, and shed tears together.
Focus and accountability. Many coaches set the agenda for each session by asking, "What's on your mind today?" While this coaching style often provides real-time emotional relief, it leads to an unfocused and overly reactive coaching process. My approach is different. Though I certainly try to show up for my clients when they have a pressing, real-time issue, my main job is to help them achieve their most important goals. This means helping my clients clarify meaningful goals at the outset, and regularly setting our session agendas with those goals in mind. It also means holding my clients accountable; asking them if they did what they said they would and what they learned in the process. I tell my clients what I see and ask them the questions that most people shy away from — all in service of them staying accountable to the goals they have for themselves and their companies.
Beyond tactics. Though I regularly discuss frameworks and tactics with my clients, my approach extends beyond that. Most meaty growth requires going beyond what we do and looking at how we think. I regularly ask my clients to explore their underlying fears, beliefs, and assumptions because updating them is the key to unlocking new possibilities and true growth.
Whole person. Although my coaching typically focuses on my clients' professional growth, I see my clients as whole people. I see them as siblings, and sons, and mothers, and spouses, and friends. If my clients realize a pattern we're exploring shows up in their non-work life, I'm happy to discuss it. If something going on at home is impacting them at work, it's totally in bounds. If they decide they'd like to set a goal that is predominately related to their family or friendships, I'm game. The reality is our lives are not bento boxes. Growth in one area inevitably touches other areas. I'm here for it.
I work with leaders who want a long-term, deep partnership with their coach — so most of my clients work with me on annual retainer, meeting either 2x per month or weekly.
My sessions are between 60-75 minutes long via phone or video call, and I’m available to all my clients by phone, text, or email between sessions (within reason).
Though most clients are on annual retainer, no blood oaths required. My engagements can be cancelled and prorated at any time.
My clients tend to want a trusted partner who will be in their corner through multiple chapters of their founder journey. I'm grateful that my practice reflects this today: my average client engagement is 4 years.
My fee for my coaching varies by engagement and depends on if I'm providing any additional coaching, training, or facilitation services as part of the contract. To give you a sense of if I'm in your ballpark fee-wise, you should expect to budget at least $3000 a month. I do accept equity-based compensation on a case-by-case basis.
Yes.
I have extensive experience helping co-founders strengthen, improve, and repair their relationships. Typically, these engagements involve each founder signing up for one of my annual retainers and then we thoughtfully distribute our coaching time between pair sessions and individual sessions.
Rarely.
My first priority is always to my individual (or co-founder pair) coaching relationships, and this work takes up the majority of my time — so I typically say no to group or team training requests. One exception to this is the “live 360 feedback training” I offer as an à la carte option for most of my 1:1 engagements. If you’re looking to train managers, I encourage you to explore the startup manager training I helped create. For any other team-based work, I will gladly connect you to other talented coaches or trainers.
As for retreats and workshops, I offer my Founder EQ Retreat once or twice a year, and occasionally get clients together for kitesurf "learn and recharge" weeks.
